Der aus Hannover stammende Bildhauer Johann Gottfried Schmidt hat zwischen 1787 und 1789 insgesamt drei Büsten von Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz gefertigt. Zwei von ihnen haben den Kupferstich von Martin Bernigeroth (um 1690) zur Vorlage.

Schmidt stellt Leibniz ohne barocke Perücke dar. Denn die Büste soll Leibniz so darstellen, wie er morgens, eben aus dem Bette gestiegen, an sein Pult tritt, um einen guten Gedanken niederzuschreiben.

Between 1787 and 1789 Johann Gottfried Schmidt, a sculptor from Hanover, created three busts showing Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.

Schmidt shows Leibniz without the baroque wig. The bust was meant to represent Leibniz in a moment, having just got up and gone to his desk to write down a good idea.
